Over my 47 years of teaching I obviously taught many different courses, varying from "Strength of Materials (for Physics Majors)",
"Prestressed Concrete Design", to "Computer Semantics"
and "Professionalism in Computing". My style of teaching changed considerably also, starting in the 1950's as a blunt
lecture style to what I have now discovered is called dialogical learning. The use of AV deveices also changed radically as the
technology changed and developed. In my final year I was able to use large scale touch screens that really helped me bring out my showmanship!
But that is all behind me now.
Educational Topics
- CS 1104 Introduction to Computer Science; I introduced this course into the
curriculum back in the 1970s and it has seen a great of change since that time.
Starting in 1999, I started to convert this to a distance learning course not only providing class notes
but also a large number of laboratory exercises and projects. This course went "on-line" in Fall 2001,
and was used in three different styles of learning - full time in-class, once a week tutorial sessions, and fully distance learning.
However, the changes in
Javascript over the years could not be maintained, and there was no-one to make the changes to Java, so this development was lost
after 2004.
- CS 3604 Professionalism in Computing:
I developed this course in 1984 and taught it regularly until 2002.
It was one of the first courses to be converted to an on-line course at Virginia Tech.
The collection of materials is under continual construction, as new topics come to the surface and
as new materials become available.
It also is undergoing changes to make it more interactive with a view to finally making a true web-based learning system.
The materials have been reorganized into separate directories in order to allow users from other
institutions to build their own "front ends" and then link to the
library of collected materials. Unfortunately this course has not been updated since 2002. Anyone who uses this material needs
to ensure that in the currency of topics is achieved.
For example, Intellectual Property conditions are changing constantly and that which was current in 2002
is most probably current today. A special page for Instructors is also
available.
- I once taught a course on elementary HTML -- the web page is still on-line and possibly useful!
Computer History

- The collection of materials on the history of computing
is settling down after several years of development.
The Virtual Museum of Computing was developed by a team of students
under my direction in Spring 1996 but with changes in servers and systems it is not longer viable.
Personal Links
- My resume-style home page is still here.
- I have had the opportunity to travel
over much of the world and am slowly getting my pictures on-line.
- The love of my life is now centered on Dublin Baptist Church and the work of the
Hearts and Hammers group.
My friend Mike Williams was traveling in Australia early in 2000 and found this boat that I must have left behind when I was last there:
