Query by Image Content

Please take about 1/2 hour and try out IBM's query by image content (QBIC) demonstration. It will show you about searching and matching approaches for multimedia (image collections with text). Follow the instructions for the various demos, especially "Our old Stock Photo demo spruced up with our Java GUI"

Try both browsing and focused search. You might look for beach scenes, or images with babies, or cities.

Please send a paragraph summary of your experiences. Be sure to try each of the types of search covered. Fundamentally, you can search by supplying keywords, by supplying an image that acts like a query, or by providing a sketch to serve as query.

The Customized Search gives you a Color Picker so you can make a sketch of the image desired, e.g., have blue on top and green on bottom to find a scene with sky and grass. The various Similarity measure options match on amount of each color, where colors appear, or on textures used. For each type of image you are looking for, indicate which approach worked best.
