PKZIP For Windows

  1. Once you have downloaded the PKZIP for Windows archive on your system, double click on pkxx0w32.exe to launch and start the installation process.
    You should see a screen similar to the following:



  2. Proceed to tell the program where to install PKZIP and click on the Extract button, (note - if you are in the CS lab you must extract to the Z:\users\<yourpid> directory.
    PKZIP for Windows should now be installed on your system.
  3. Now start up PKZIP for Windows by double clicking on the PKZIP icon, (or using the Menu: Start, Programs, Pkware, PKZIP for Windows).

     

    You should be presented with a screen like this:

Please leave your browser and execute each step of the following tutorial.

  1. Switch to , (or start), the PKZIP for Windows application.
  2. Click on the open folder icon or go to the File menu and select Open...
  3. When presented with the file chooser dialog, change the files of type field (bottom of window) from Zip File ( *.ZIP) to PKSFX File (*.EXE).
    This allows one to see self extracting archives (explained later).
  4. Now go to the directory where you downloaded PKZIP for Windows and double click on the file pkxx0w32.

     

    Your screen should look like this:


    You will notice that the files within the archive are shown in the window. If you wanted to extract the files, simply hold down your left mouse button and highlight the desired files.


  5. Highlight all the files you wish to decompress and then click on the Unzip menu and select Extract files...

     


    You should now see this screen shot:

     


  6. Now type c:\temp as the directory to extract files to and click on the "Extract" button.
  7. Congratulations, you have successfully extracted a compressed archive.


Creating a New Archive with PKZIP for Windows

  1. Open PKZIP for Windows as explained above
  2. Click on the new file icon or select New... from the File menu
  3. You should be presented with a file chooser dialog.
    Type ">temp.zip in the file name field -- this will create a compressed archive called temp.zip in the current directory.
    You should see a dialog similar to this:


  4. Now select a few files from the listing of files in the center of the screen. Select multiple files by holding down <Ctrl> and clicking.
  5. Once you have a few files selected, click the Add Files button.
  6. Now click on the OK button.
    You should see a status screen such as this:


  7. When all compressing and archiving has been completed, click on the Done button.
  8. You have now successfully created a new zip archive!

Adding and Deleting Files From Existing Archives with PKZIP for Windows

  1. Open an existing zip file as described above
  2. If you wish to delete files, simply select them from the archive listing and click on Delete files... in the Zip menu. You will be prompted to make sure you want to delete the file(s).
  3. To Add files to an existing zip files, simply click on Add files... in the Zip menu. You will be given the same dialog as when creating a new zip file. Select the files you want to add and click on the Done button.
