Getting Started

Load Eudora from the menu ...

 

If this is the first time you have loaded this software, you will be presented with the following dialog:

Getting Started Configuration

If not, select Options from the Tools menu.

You should configure Eudora as described below:

In the Getting Started Category:

POP account:
This is the account that Eudora will retrieve mail for.
If you are in the McBryde 118 Lab, type <your userid>@mail-proxy.cslab.vt.edu (this accesses mail.vt.edu via the proxy machine in the CS Lab).
If you are configuring Eudora on your own machine, type <your userid>@mail.vt.edu

 

Real Name:
Type your name (as you want it to appear in outgoing messages).

 

Return Address:
Type the email address you want people to reply to (usually userid@vt.edu or userid@cslab.vt.edu).

 

Connection Method:
Make certain the Winsock box is checked.

In the Personal Info Category:

Personal Info Configuration

POP account:
This is the account that Eudora will retrieve mail for (should be same as above).
If you are in the McBryde 118 Lab, type <your userid>@mail-proxy.cslab.vt.edu (this accesses mail.vt.edu via the proxy).
If you are configuring Eudora on your own machine, type <your userid>@mail.vt.edu

 

Real Name:
Type your name (as you want it to appear in outgoing messages).

 

Return Address:
Type the email address you want people to reply to (usually userid@vt.edu or userid@cslab.vt.edu).

 

Dialup username:
Leave blank.

In the Hosts Category:

Hosts Configuration

POP account:
This is the account that Eudora will retrieve mail for (should be same as above).
If you are in the McBryde 118 Lab, type <your userid>@mail-proxy.cslab.vt.edu (this accesses mail.vt.edu via the proxy).
If you are configuring Eudora on your own machine, type <your userid>@mail.vt.edu

 

SMTP:
If you are in the McBryde 118 Lab, type mail.cslab.vt.edu
If you are configuring Eudora on your own machine, leave this space blank.

 

Ph:
Type ns.vt.edu
This allows you to issue a ph command to the Virginia Tech server.
To use the ph client, go to the Tools menu and select Directory Services. Type in a person's name or pid and click the ph button. If that person exists on the Virginia Tech system, information will be returned.

 

Finger:
Type finger.vt.edu
This allows you to issue finger commands to the Virginia Tech server.
To use the finger client, go to the Tools menu and select Directory Services. Type in a person's name or pid and click the finger button. If that person exists on the Virginia Tech system, information will be returned.

In the Checking Mail Category:

Checking Mail Configuration

POP account:
This is the account that Eudora will retrieve mail for (should be same as above).
If you are in the McBryde 118 Lab, type <your userid>@mail-proxy.cslab.vt.edu (this accesses mail.vt.edu via the CS lab proxy).
If you are configuring Eudora on your own machine, type <your userid>@mail.vt.edu

 

Check for mail every _____ minutes:
Please type a 0. Checking mail every certain amount of time is a huge waste of the school's computer systems. When you want to check your mail, you simply click on the check mail icon.
You may wish to check the Leave mail on server checkbox in order to be able to retrieve your messages a second time from your personal machine.

 

Return Address:
Type the email address you want people to reply to (usually userid@vt.edu or userid@cslab.vt.edu).

Change any of the other options as you see fit.

When you are done, click on OK.

You are now ready to send messages using Eudora.
