Anonymous Logins

Free Access
- Anonymous FTP services provides access to all Internet users
at no cost.
- Anonymous access is not available on all Internet machines,
however.
Usage
- Login
- To login to an anonymous FTP server, type
anonymous as your username.
- Passwords
- Nettiquette (Internet Etiquette) suggests sending your
email address as the connection password. This information is
usually stored in a log so the administrators can compile usage
statistics.
- Connection Loads (peaks)
- Access to heavily subscribed sites should be limited to
non-peak hours, (other than business hours), for quicker
response times.
- Limits
- Many sites limit the number of concurrent anonymous
connections to insure adequate response times (service).
- READMEs
- Most sites have README files which should be downloaded
& read to learn the site's access procedures. README files
can often be found in each directory giving a description of
the other files.
- Mirrors
- Some sites are so popular that they cannot keep up with the
demand for service. Many such sites provide a list of mirror
sites. A mirror site is another Internet machine that has the
exact same files & directory structure available for
download.
