Synchronous network collaboration requires real-time data sharing.
This allows users to see changes that each other make on a shared
document. This sharing can run the spectrum from full screen
mirroring to sharing a single document in a single window.
The whiteboard feature built into NetMeeting allows users to
dynamically share, edit and create imported images or drawings. As a
change is made by a user it is immediately reflected in the the
mirror image of the connected user. To start a whiteboard session,
connect to another user using NetMeeting in the same
manner as placing a network phone
call. When the connection is established select the
Whiteboard option from the Tools menu. This will open the whiteboard dialog window,
as shown below.

Use the drawing and text tools to collaborate with someone to test the NetMeeting shared whiteboard, creating a simple document. Make changes to the document that your party can view and allow them to do the same.

In addition to the whiteboard file sharing, NetMeeting allows the
direct transferring of files between connected users. To upload a
file to a connected user, simply select the File Transfer option from the
Tools menu. This will open the File Trasfer dialog
window, as illustrated at left.
The Add Files button brings up a file dialog box for selecting
the file to be transferred and the Send All button
starts the transferal. Transfer a small simple file to your
connected party and then wait to receive a small file from your
party.
NetMeeting's Remote Desktop Sharing feature allows one user to control the
machine of another user. Due to security restrictions and concerns this feature
will not be covered in this tutorial. Students may wish to explore this feature
themselves with someone they trust with access to their system. To begin desktop
sharing with a connected user, first select the Enable Sharing option from the
Tools menu then turn the Remote Desktop Sharing...
option on.
