Telnet

PAGE (1 of 3)

Introduction

Telnet is a protocol used to perform remote login, (account), connections across the Internet. Telnet is analogous to simple modem communications package connections, (e.g., HyperTerminal). Telnet client applications emulate terminals, (monitor/keyboard hardware devices used for performing logins into mainframe and mini-computer systems).

By using a telnet client and remotely logging into another networked computer executing a telnet server apllication, one can execute programs on the remote host, perform file management, etc. Telnet access is commonly associated with multi-user operating systems, providing character interface access.

Special Ports

Specific ports are listened to by different server applications. Ports allows servers to provide different services. (Server ports are actually virtual ports. They are established and created by software and are not the same as hardware ports.)

Telnet Clients

Many telnet clients are available for all types of different platforms. Many mainframes provides a text based version of telnet. (Text interface based telnet clients on mainframes require an escape sequence 'CNTRL-^]' to specify commands.)

The next pages will briefly cover the Tera Term, and Ewan Telnet Clients.
