Tera Term Pro

Tera Term Pro is a freeware Telnet terminal emulator created by Takashi Teranishi. It supports VT100 terminal emulation, (the most commonly emulated terminal), as well as VT200/300 emulation. It is available via FTP from ftp://ftp.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/PC/terminal/teraterm/ttermp22.zip and from www.tucows.com.

To execute Tera Term Pro from the CS lab, look in the labapps shared directory, (Y:\) and double click on the Tera Term icon shown above.

Establishing a Connection

When Tera Term starts execution it may automatically open a new connection dialog window. The host machine to which one wishes to connect should be entered in the Host field. (The serial button would be used if one was connecting over a modem.)

When establishing a connection from the CS lab, the first telnet connection may have to be made through gatekeeper.cslab.vt.edu. (This allows traversal of the lab Firewall.) After connecting to gatekeeper, simply enter the text command: telnet machine.subdomain.domain at the gatekeeper prompt to connect to the desired server.

Once a connection is established, one must enter their remote account information to login. Use the Tera Term Pro application from the lab to connect to the VT dropadd system and check your current course schedule.

Access the dropadd system by first connecting to gatekeeper.cslab.vt.edu and then telnetting to either the CBX terminal server (vtcbx.cc.vt.edu) or directly to dropadd, (dropadd.vt.edu).
