Subscribing

Newsgroup names are composed of several fields that provide a description of the topics discussed by a group. For example, comp.sys.mac.apps discusses Macintosh applications; bburg.general is a local Blacksburg newsgroup; new.announce.newusers and news.newusers.questions are good groups for new users to read.

• Subscribing
  • After receiving the latest group list, WinVn will offer the user the chance to subscribe to the news groups.
  • If starting your newsreader client application for the first time, you have the option of subscribing to all or some of the available newsgroups.
  • Subsequent use of the newsreader client application will show only the groups to which you have subscribed.
  • In the New Newsgroups box, subscribed groups will be at the top. Other available groups will be listed in a different color below it.
  • Scroll down in the Top Level Hierarchy, and select the vt group. Then scroll down in the Unsubscribed Groups, and double-click on the vatech.class.cs1205 group or the vatech.class.cs1604 group, (from behind the lab firewall the group may be at vt.class.cs1205). Select any other groups to which you wish to subscribe.

  Once the newsgroups have been retrieved and are listed in the left window labelled All Groups, double-click on a group and a dialog box will appear to "Get All Message Headers" or "Subscribe to Group". Select "Subscribe to Group".

  

  Scroll down in All Groups, and double-click on the vatech.class.cs1205 group or the vatech.class.cs1604 group and subscribe to it. Select and subscribe to any other groups which you wish to access often.
