Course Information

Grading Policy:

There will be one Final Exam worth 25% of your final grade given on the last lecture day, Monday, April 27, 1998. 15% of your grade will also be derived from your class attendance and participation. The remaining 60% of your grade will be based on 5-10 homework assignments. All homework assignments will be done using FreeBSD.

Lab Policy:

This is a 2 credit course consisting of a one-hour lecture (Mondays at 8:00 am) and a one-hour lab. There are 13 sections of the lab, listed above. Because of space and seating limitations, you are required to attend the lab section/time you have registered for, and may not jump between sections. During a given week, the same material will be taught to all sections.

Again for seating limitations, while in the one-hour lab sessions for this class students will work in pairs. Often, students are able to learn more easily from each other while solving problems together. You are encouraged to select and stick with the same lab partner for the duration of the course. While work during lab can be collaborative with your lab partner, all lab writeups, homework assignments, and tests must be your own work.

Students will not be allowed to work individually during lab sessions unless space permits.

Late Policy:

No late assignments will be accepted.

Class Attendance:

You must always attend class. Attendance in lab is also mandatory. Part of your final grade is based on attendance. Student attendance in class or lab will be periodically checked through in-lab assignments, pop quizes, or actual attendance-taking.

If, due to extenuating circumstances, you will be unable to attend your lab hour in a given week, make arrangements in advance with your lab instructor to sit in on an alternate lab section. If the alternate section is taught by a different instructor, you must consult him in advance as well. Making up lab time in this manner is limited by available space, and is at the discretion of the instructor(s) involved.

If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what was discussed, what assignments were made, or what handouts were given from other students.

The Honor Code:

The Honor Code applies to this course and will be enforced. All graded assignments must be your own work. You may seek help during office or lab hours from the GTAs or the instructor. Always give credit for work that is not entirely your own (e.g., parts of programs or homework answers borrowed from a book, or results obtained working with your partner during lab sessions).

Notes:

• If any student needs special accommodations because of a disability, please contact the instructor during the first week of classes.
• There are no make-ups on the homeworks, programs, or tests.
• Keep all returned assignments until the end of the semester.
• Keep a personal backup copy of each assignment/program you are to turn in.
• All discussions concerning programs or other graded assignments must occur within two weeks after the assignments are returned.
