Howard Turtle and W. Bruce Croft worked on the use of Bayesian networks for information retrieval. This led to Dr. Turtle's PhD disseration study at Univ. of Mass. at Amherst and to the Inquery system which is distributed from Sovereign Hill Software.
Their approach made sufficient assumptions to allow efficient computation of relevance of documents in response to various versions of a query.
