Since so many different approaches are now used to prepare documents, and since support for schemes like SGML are just now emerging for widespread use, many digital library efforts are still focused on pages.
One such approach deals with scanned page images. Usually, 300dpi black and white is the input format. Sometimes 400dpi is used, and on occasion 600dpi is used for special or archival documents. Note that 300 dpi grayscale can be prepared from 600dpi black and white.
The other approach builds upon PostScript or other page description languages. We can see more details by considering representative projects.
