Questions for Form A

  1. What is the value of a national electronic library to the typical K-12 student (Kindergarten through 12th grade)? Describe this using a list of at least 5 bullets, rather than prose, with one important added-value (provided by such a library) covered by each bullet.

  2. The gopher files available for browsing through the class readings could be extended to include all readings commonly studied by first year graduate students. They could be packaged on a CD-ROM and made to work with most UNIX systems. Please write a short, 1 page proposal to ACM Press Database and Electronic Products, suggesting this.

  3. Collecting and integrating the materials for an electronic library are very challenging tasks. Explain why - briefly.

  4. If Project Envision provided network access to a large part of the ACM publications, and charged on behalf of ACM, would it be better for charges to be per use or per copy received? Why?

  5. Describe the main differences between the send, find, and whois type commands of netlib. Which of these allows Boolean query forms, and why are such query forms useful for such types of access?
