Questions for Form C

  1. What is a most important challenge facing builders of electronic libraries? Explain briefly.

  2. Is making a copy of a copyrighted data file from your office computer, to take it home for use on your home computer that night, fair, given the Supreme Court decision in the Sony Betamax case? Explain briefly.

  3. What would be the value of an adaptable user interface for computer professionals to access the emerging ACM electronic library - an interface that would adapt to each particular user's style and task requirements, and lead users on to see and go beyond a single small page or piece of that library.

  4. Electronic equivalents to bookmarks, turning down page corners, and trails through readings - how can they help those working with a large hypertext collection, and how should we deal with the intellectual property rights that relate?

  5. ACM's Collected Algorithms are available for sale on tapes or diskettes, and are also available from netlib. Who do you think would be most interested in each of these sources, and why would they prefer that particular source? What are two types of usage of an electronic library that would be very awkward when using a netlib type mail interface? Why?
