Questions for Form B

  1. Very very high compression ratios and use of Hausdorff distance are associated with what type of image compression? Please explain briefly. [Hint: this method requires enormous amounts of computation for each still image.]

  2. The forward discrete cosine transform maps from the image domain to what other domain, so that more efficient encoding is possible? Please explain what is operated upon, how the tranform is computed, and why this leads to more efficient encoding.

  3. DVI under AVK uses the 82750B as a co-processor to manage what? (Hint: it does this to offload the host processor and maintain independence from it.) Please briefly explain how the host and co-processor work to play back video.

  4. Briefly describe how JPEG deals with large (e.g., 512x512) color images - i.e., how the output bit stream combines the data from the color components and from the different parts of the image.

  5. Separate areas of memory are used with AVK for various types of bitmaps. What types of bitmaps are needed? Is more or less memory needed than was needed for AVSS? How does the use of memory relate to the speed of processing of the pixel processor - i.e., compare speed and memory use of the 82750A vs. B chips. How does all this relate to (at least 2) desirable capabilities that related to use of DVI with windowing environments?
