Abstract:
Given the growing field of electronic publishing, and the many
reasons to build digital libraries that were explored in the last
unit, we proceed from the question of WHY to the questions of
HOW TO USE and HOW TO BUILD. These questions will
remain with us throughout the rest of the course, and will lead to a
detailed study of many of the issues and approaches studied by
Information Storage and Retrieval researchers.
This Unit provides an overview and a foundation for further
study in this field. It deals with three readings and one exercise.
Class time will be devoted primarily to discussion and individual
work, with a short introduction/overview during the lecture
meetings.
