Objectives

From the Course Objectives a key point is to: critique, contrast, compare, and evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness, and utility of commercially available and research prototype systems for IS &R. In this Unit, you will accordingly work with Lector to display SGML documents, with SoftQuad HoTMetaL to see how SGML documents can be created and edited, with SGMLS to see how SGML parsers perform, and with ICA to learn both how to develop grammars and DTDs, and how to translate documents from one form to another. Regarding the objective: to discuss and explain the main issues relating to developing electronic libraries and related services, you will be prepared by learning what is involved in setting up standard representation forms for such libraries (i.e., SGML DTDs), and know how difficult it is to translate among various representation forms. Finally, regarding the the objective to: read and understand research contributions ..., you will gain experience by reading the two CACM articles, and using the manuals for the software packages used with the exercises.

This Unit has the following objectives, for students to be able to:

  1. describe the benefits of SGML for representing documents;

  2. describe the benefits of SGML display and editing tools like Lector and HoTMetaL and

  3. describe the benefits of systems like ICA that assist in document interchange and construction of electronic libraries.
