Description:
IBM has a special program to run multiple virtual machines
using VM on mainframes, where each is a full Linux system.
These can communicate with each other. We can submit a proposal
for access to roughly 5 such Linux accounts and then experiment
with these to see how well and how quickly they operate. This
will allow studies of:
- Performance relative to other Linux systems on campus, such
as the PetaPlex (with 100 nodes running Linux), and individual PCs.
- Porting of software we run on our Linux systems, locally,
such as the inverted file routines developed by Ohm Sornil (see
subproject 1 under the PetaPlex project listing).
- Porting of standard software that relates to multimedia, so
we can let students in CS4624 in future years each have their own
virtual Linux system to experiment with.
