Project Suggestion: MARIAN

• Number of people: 2-10
• Goal: Complete converting MARIAN to Java and document it for reuse
• Contact information: The Virginia Tech contacts are Robert France (france@vt.edu) and Marcos Andre Goncalves (mgoncalv@vt.edu), along with the instructor.
• Required background: familiarity Java, and some with library, digital library and/or information retrieval system development or operation
• Description: You can try the MARIAN library catalog search system which provides access to the same data as the VTLS system that handles Virginia Tech library holdings. Or, better, use the experimental system. MARIAN has been under development by the Research Department of the Virginia Tech Computing Center and the Digital Library Research Laboratory (DLRL).

  This project aims to complete the porting of MARIAN to Java, so that the old C/C++ system can be retired (before our old NeXT computers all die). We also want to document and package it so that it can be used by other sites, including those involved in NDLTD.
