News on 96/12/13
- Check the Status link on home page. Please notify the instructor if
your records differ from what is shown.
Everything that the instructor has received to-date should be
reflected. Note that the ID used is your
secret login as in the "xx" part of cs5604xx.
- The final will be taken like a quiz. Do not start before 12/13
at 10:05am when we meet in McB 116/118.
News on 96/12/9
- All the units are now available in the monitor mode.
Also, every student who is done in a unit should now be
able to retake quizzes to review for the final.
News on 96/12/1
- All assignments and quizes are available.
- Classes on 12/3, 12/5 and 12/10 will be held as usual. 12/3 will be
and informal review and question answering period. 12/10 will be a
formal review. 12/5 will allow lab work, and will be when project groups
provide their last informal project report.
- Remember that the final is 12/13, and that all quizes are due that day.
It is preferable that the rest of the assigned work is turned in that
day, too.
News on 96/11/16
- The videotapes presented in class on 11/5 have been placed atop the
TV monitor and VCR in McB 110 and can be viewed there anytime by individuals or groups.
- Class on Tue 11/19 will be in McB 216 as usual, but may move to McB 102
if Robert France finds that useful. Class on Thu 11/21 will be in McB 102
so that live demos can be presented of Envision, and to save the walk to
Derring.
News on 96/10/30
- Class for 10/31 will be in 334 McB, where we will work work with KMS
on Sun 20 systems.
- Please prepare a summary of your progress and problems faced with
your project.
News on 96/10/20, 10/22
- The Calendar has been updated.
Note the special events for 10/29, 10/31 (new location), 11/5, 11/7 (new
location), 11/19, 11/21. The instructor will be out of town 10/25-29,
11/5-9, 11/16-22, 12/6-7 so plan accordingly when working on projects
or assignments.
- It is urgent that students try to catch up on units. By now, you
should be finished with the RR unit.
News on 96/10/17
- Please change your password on any account you have related to
this course. There has been a security breach and this is urgent.
- MILIA (the International Publishing and New Media Market) conference
in Cannes, France, Feb. 9-12, 1997 wants students in multimedia programs
to present their projects. A representative from each project chosen
will have their travel expenses paid! Deadline is Nov. 15. Please see
the instructor if you want to apply.
- A new Kodak digital camera will be brought to class on Tuesday so we
can have online pictures for your home pages. Or, come to the office of
the instructor to have your picture taken privately.
News on 96/10/5
- You probably won't want to do the SS exercise
in Derring, since there is
not support for X Windows there.
News on 96/9/26
- The IF assignment has been updated. To do the exercise you will need
to use video, so be sure to have a person in your group familar with UNIX.
- Changes are being made to QUIZIT today to improve feedback on quizes
where you are unsure of the correct answers, and to fix other problems.

- Drop date is Oct. 4. By then you should have finished the
DL and IR units at the least. If doing so presents a problem,
you may want to meet with the instructor to discuss.

- There is now a version of the syllabus that includes almost everything
relevant as a single page.
- Please send the instructor by Monday 9/16 the URL for a short description
of your project and project group. See the pages pointed to from
http://ei.cs.vt.edu/~mm/s96/sspace/Projects.html
for examples of what to provide.
See the instructor to get help in defining the project.
If you wish you can use video.cs.vt.edu to create the WWW page(s)
for this. For example, the URL for file MMnotes.pdf in ~fox/public_html
on video has URL http://video.cs.vt.edu:90/~fox/MMnotes.pdf (which you
may find of interest later when we study multimedia).
- You are all invited to join a tutorial session on Broadcast Quality
Digital Video that Win Heagy and I will run 9/12/96 from 5-7pm in
McB 110. This was scheduled for Staff, but there will only be 2 of
them, so we welcome others to participate.
News on 96/9/6
- Many more articles are available now in page image form.
- Groups for projects started to form in lab Tuesday. There will
be brief discussion of projects in lecture next Tue and more group
formation in lab on Thur.
News on 96/9/2
- On video.cs.vt.edu, if you run netscape it will automatically make
use of xtiff, which gives you very large (full size, 300dpi)
display of page images, that will help with reading the CACM articles
online.
News on 96/8/30
- Please be very careful when printing so as not to unduly consume
resources. In particular, do not print the page images for the
articles - those are meant to be viewed online. If you need copies,
please check out from the Library Reserve and use a photocopier.
On video, if you use the "lpr" command, that only works if the file
referred to is ASCII or PostScript - any other format is likely to
lead to printer problems and waste of paper.
- The listserv is in place and all with vtaix accounts have been
added, and should have received the first announcement. If you wish to
be added, see the online instructions.
News on 96/8/29
- Please start your work with Assignment DL.
- Forms for the pre-test
will be given out
in class on Monday, so please fill that in after that time.
- If you missed the lab in Derring 2069 on Thur, please see the instructor
to enter your password so you can take quizes, or send the
instructor a password (no more than 8 characters) that he will enter for
you.
- The online Koofers file has been extended to include ALL
of the quizes and the Final from last 1995.
