Computer Exercise

This exercise has a required part using HoTMetaL and an optional part involving Panorama. In addition, you may wish to study more about ICA that was covered in the readings, by reading the manual that is on reserve in the Library.

(Required:) Regarding HoTMetaL, on video.cs.vt.edu please run it by saying sqhm after your environment is like that which results from using the .login file in /home/video/fox. From the File menu select Open Template and then select Homepage.html which is a sample home page for WWW. Please use Save As in the File menu and save as a file in your home directory. Please use the View menu to Show Tags. Please use Preview in the File menu to see how Mosaic will handle this. Then, revise this to be a reasonable home page for you, and give the name of the final file you save to the instructor, so it can be pointed to by the home page of the class. You may wish to refer to the HTML documentation mentioned in the course notes for this unit, and/or to model your home page after those of others. If you already have done a home page, try to import that and see if HoTMetaL can work with it --- i.e., see if your page was syntactically correct --- and let the instructor know.

(Optional exercise:) If you are interested and have time, please work with Panorama. At one point it was installed in the McB 118 laboratory. It is available on the WWW for Windows here. It might work in Derring on the Mac systems under Windows. Please:

  1. Get Panorama to work.
  2. Find 2 good examples of SGML documents that you can access with Panorama, where the SGML structure seems of value. Tell the instructor where they are, and why you selected them.
  3. Write a short paragraph arguing whether it is better for the WWW to stay with HTML vs. allowing any SGML document to be used.
