Overview

Virginia Tech's Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) Banner system is a newly installed system for managing all HR related information on campus. The system is versatile enough to handle information about hourly employees and emergency hires as well as research grants and other HR and accounting issues specific to the university environment.

However, with versatility often comes complexity. And, the Banner system is no exception. The system has numerous features, and a complete two day training program for instructing new users on using these features and maneuvering around some "first release style" bugs.

Our team spent an afternoon learning about and studying the Banner system, under the guidance of one of the system trainers, focusing on the user interface. We then developed a set of scenarios that exemplify some typical user-system interactions. Using these scenarios as a foundation and an illustration of specific situations of use, we make some claims about some of the artifacts present in the system and the way they are employed by the users. This claims analysis leads to some suggested improvements - possible changes to the system that could be implemented in the next release of the Banner system.
