SCENARIO-BASED CLAIMS ANALYSIS OF MOOSBURG

SCENARIO 1

Tim lives in New York, but now he finds New York is getting too crowded and unlivable. A desire to live a peaceful life urges him to explore new territories. From friends he has heard that Blacksburg is a serene place to live (and possibly retire), and so Tim enters MOOsburg to get an idea of what it is like to be in Blacksburg. He logs in as anonymous (the default selection), and opens the Web/Java view. The first thing he notices is the temperature. It is 19 Nov, and the temperature in the day is currently 53 degree. That looks warm according to NY standards. Tim finds himself on 300 South Main Street.  He would like to know if there are any shopping malls nearby. However, he is unable to see any "list of places to visit". Being a ghostly presence, he cannot talk to anybody while he's there, even though he finds two persons nearby.  He can see exit signs and a compass to help him navigate, but he has no idea where to go. There isn't even any photo gallery for Tim to browse. Disappointed, Tim returns and begins looking for other cities to move to.

CLAIMS ANALYSIS OF SCENARIO 1

  • Compass :
... provides a clickable interface for navigation in MOOsburg.
... makes exploration of MOOsburg more intuitive.
... but users may not know the difference between "Up" and "North" on the compass.
... but is redundant, because there are already links to the directions in the main frame.
... but the text areas "Up", "Down", "South", etc may be too small for the user, so the user have to spend more time to choose the desired target. As fitts' law points out, The components of a target acquisition task that make up the index of difficulty are the amplitude of the movement (the distance from the start position to the center of the target) and the target width. As target width decreases it takes longer to land on target.
  • Telnet window:
... People may be reluctant to use the telnet window because of their resistance to discussions in writing. Many people feel more comfortable talking face to face rather than through a chat window, where you have to use the keyboard.
... but user may not know that it is resizeable
... but the text in window may scroll too fast and user may not know how to pause the scrolling
