Visit Nostalgia

Surveys

Surveys were sent to all the people who had contributed stories or annotations, to obtain their views about the Nostalgia site. We sent twenty surveys out of which five people could not be reached. We received seven responses which are summarized below:

Internet browser used:

  • The following browsers were mainly used by the seniors: Netscape 2.0, Netscape 2.02, Netscape 4.0, Netscape 4.02, and Internet Explorer 2.0.

Familiarity and Use of the Nostalgia Site

  • The Seniors came to know about the site through either the senior listserv or browsing through the BEV and Virginia Tech Web sites.
  • In response to whether the nostalgia site was well known among the Blacksburg Seniors, their opinion was that it was probably not well known. Others did not know about it as they no longer resided in Blacksburg and happened to come across it while surfing the Web.
  • Frequency of visits: Some had visited the site 10-15 times to either finish reading all the stories or check on any updates. Those who lived outside Blacksburg, but were associated with Blacksburg, hoped to stumble on some old friends. Some had visited it once to four times.

Impression about the site

Everyone had a good overall impression of the site. Some of the users felt that it validated their memories and they could relate to most of the stories. They liked the present set of stories and annotations but hoped for more.

Opinions about the design

They like how the pages were easy to load, that they had no glitz and Ads., they are easy to use, easy to add annotations, the instructions are easy to follow, and it's sequential layout.

Features/Functions found difficult to use

Headings were found to be a little vague. It was difficult to scan for updates or new additions to the site.

Moderating the site

A very varied opinion was expressed, some thought it should be moderated to prevent inappropriate submissioins, others thought it was not really necessary as they believe in free speech but felt that any misinformation should be pointed out. Others thought nobody would submit anything inappropriate as everyone is mature and caring of their community.

Suggestions about improving the site

  • Addition of a guestbook, so that those who are spread far and wide may stumble across old friends.
  • A picture gallery, to revive more memories.
  • An exhaustive subject list, pointing at specific places or events to spur more memories.

Effect of Nostalgia stories and discussions

  • For those who no longer live in Blacksburg, it brought out the way Blacksburg has changed, physically and in attitude, over the years.
  • For some, the stories projected what others thought about some past events and places which they may have taken for granted.
  • For others, a realization of how much fun it is to reminisce.
