CS5734 Final
CS5734 Final Exam

Your final exam is scheduled for 10:05am, Tuesday May 5. This will be a 2-hour essay exam. It will be open-book and open-notes.

Exam questions proposed by class members

Note to question proposers: in a few cases I have edited or even deleted a question if I felt it was ambiguous, or could not be answered in 1-2 paragraphs (about one-half page).

  1. What are some key differences between "community networks" and "network communities"? Give at least one social implication for each difference you raise.
  2. Choose two of the design methodologies or frameworks discussed early in the semester and explain why they are particularly relevant to the design or evaluation of CSCW systems.
  3. Discuss two potential limitations of collaboration over the Internet; include suggestions for how you might overcome these limitations in designing CSCW systems.
  4. Discuss the positive and negative impacts of the reduced social cues found with CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication) systems. Give at least one example (i.e., from systems we read about or discussed in class) of how you might emphasize a positive effect and another for how you might overcome a negative impact.
  5. Compare and contrast approaches for facilitating awareness within sharedworkspaces. How important are issues of awareness for synchronous CSCW systems?
  6. Explain the salient features of the DOLPHIN architecture and how they contribute if at all to CSCW.
  7. Which factors determine the success of groupware in enhancing the performance of a company? Is it sufficient to just provide groupware and leave people to find its functionality on their own? Why or why not?
  8. Summarize the most critical concerns of users of NYNEX Portholes. How were these resolved by the developers?
  9. What are the advantages provided by media spaces to distributed work? What are the drawbacks?
