Organization
- Class sessions:
Classes will consist of any of a number of activities such as
- exploration of WWW materials especially from DLI sites, and related
demonstrations
- lecture and discussion
- participation in the IBM Renaissance Digital Library meeting Oct. 20-22
- presentations of projects
- Listserv:
All students are expected to subscribe and participate in a listserv,
cs6604dl-l, which has email address cs6604dl-l@listserv.vt.edu;
see first further details.
- Projects:
Groups of students in this class, with some help from students in UH 3004,
will work to prepare a proposal and prototype demonstrations of
research on digital libraries.
- Publications:
Exceptional projects may lead to submissions to
ACM Digital Libraries'98.
- Quizzes:
Upon completing a chapter of the textbook,
students should take an online (WWW)
quiz using the QUIZIT system.
Successful completion of a quiz is worth 2 points,
and results from receiving a grade of 90% or higher on any of the first,
second or third version of each part of that quiz.
- Reading:
During the semester, according to the calendar,
each of the chapters of the textbook should be read and studied.
- Usability studies:
There will be a number of usability studies of digital libraries
carried out in which participants will be needed. You will be
expected to spend up to 4 hours (for 4 points) as a subject in
one or more of those studies.
Grading
- 64%: Participation in project effort
- 24%: Successful completion of quizzes (based mainly on textbook)
- 8%: Class and listserv participation (quality, quantity)
- 4%: Participation in usability studies
