Abstract: This all-day tutorial provides a comprehensive overview of the field of digital libraries. It aims to bring those who have expertise in other areas up to the point to appreciate the research literature and to be able to help build digital libraries (DLs).
The morning session begins with a broad overview of experiences with real DLs, conveying key lessons and concepts. Metrics are introduced to make clear what needs to be measured and improved, and a general method is explained to help build or evaluate DLs. The 5S framework is explored to help deepen understanding of the field. To conclude the morning there is discussion of an overview chapter on DLs, and an outline of the content to be covered in the afternoon.
The afternoon session begins with a discussion of the US DLI-1 and DLI-2 efforts. It explores some of the rich multimedia content found in DLs. The concept of author submission is explicated. Then there an audience-driven coverage of all of the main topics in an online tutorial on DLs, geared to address concerns of attendees.
