2. Context: Information Society

Information is central to our social and economic lives. This demands that all citizens are generally inforamtion literate and able to easily access, manage, and use inforamtion resources, and an increased emphasis information retrieval education. Many new jobs are being created by the information industry and educational isntitutions are increasingly providing formal training in information retrieval topics. The information culture has also led to increased attention to research and development in information science in general and information retrieval in particular.

3. Information Science and Computer Science

Inormation retrieval progress depends on work in several different fields. The primary fields concerned with IR are library and information science and computer science. LIS tradition is philosophy (e.g., organization of knowledge, epistimology), psychology (e.g., user needs), communication with a sociological perspective e.g., bibliometrics) CS tradition is mathematics (e.g., algorithms), engineering (systems), communication with a digital transfer perspective (e.g., networks).

Both these fields share similar concerns and common problems, however, since the traditions of the fields are different, the approaches they take in addressing these problems differ.

Just as human-computer interaction serves as a bridge between LIS and CS, so IR serves as a bridge that brings these two communities together. In this report, we identify common problems, and concpets that can serve as shared core areas of study for IR.
