Honors 3004 DL, Fall 1997 --- News / Announcements
971201@2pm:
- Please review the project-people page
and give me corrections so that I can have a place for everyone, correct
email, URLs wherever available, and readable explanations of projects.
Please advise if there is any need for something special so you can give
your presentations next Monday, beyond what is normally in 104.
- Dec. 1 we also will schedule the order for the presentations next week,
go over the contracts (e.g., how you will be graded on the project: in
terms of what will be accomplished, how many points for presentation,
how many points for writing, how many points for other deliverables),
and give you time to work on more courseware extensions.
971112@6pm:
- There is no final.
- All work for the course is due by 11:59PM 12/14/97.
- Remaining quizzes should be up soon.
- CS6604 Project
grading instructions
are online. See your syllabus
for updated grading
instuctions on projects. You need to work out a contract with the
instructor for your own grading.
- Those interested in ISI's citation databases can contact the
instructor to experiment.
971025@3pm:
- Please remember that our 10/27 class will be in the Library.
Proceed directly to Newman Library 4th floor science reference area.
Ed Lener of the library staff will guide you through hands-on experiences
with a number of tools and systems relating to digital libraries.
- Please prepare a written report of progress and plans by next
Monday's class about your project activities.
971020@5pm:
- Please attend parts of the IBM Renaissance meetings. See the
detailed agenda
- Remember that class next Monday will be in the Library.
- Please prepare a report of progress and plans by the following
Monday about your project activities.
970908@6pm:
- There is now a course page on Project
Gutenberg.
- Everyone should have the text, which was available under CS6604
in all local bookstores.
- Paul Metz, Principal Bibliographer, University Libraries,
and Eileen Hitchingham, Dean of Libraries,
will join the class Oct. 13 , discussing acquisition issues.
See some early discussion.
- Oct. 21 will be a day of activities about digital libraries,
culminating with a keynote address by Bob Heterick, President of
Educom. There will be talks and demonstrations about usability of
interfaces, and briefings by IBM and other universities on digital
library activities.
- Thursday, September 11, 4pm, Haymarket Theatre (Squires Student Center)
is when Sherry Turkle, author of Life on the Screen: Identify in the
Age of the Internet, will speak on that topic at the ninth annual
Mullins Lecture in Social Studies of Science and Technology.
- See about University Libraries services:
general,
general reference resources,
full-text
electronic journals.
970827@7pm:
- Now that the Tech Bookstore's 15 copies of our text are sold out,
the University Bookstore and Volume II will each have 12-13 copies in
by late Thur. 8/28 or early Fri. 8/29, and then each have 7-8 more
available by Saturday. The Tech Bookstore also will get 20 more
copies, in about a week.
- UH 3004 will co-locate with CS6604 again on 8/28, so that people
can discuss together about term projects. The 2 classes will start
in McB218, but the crowding will not last long ---
after a while we will split up into (4) groups, so that more in-depth
discussion can take place about group projects. So, please think a
little about the type of term project you want to pursue.
Also, remember that classes from next week on will be Monday 3-4:50pm
in McB 104c.
970826@9am:
- While our regular meetings, starting September 1, 1997, will be in McB104c,
during the first week of classes we will meet together with CS6604 in McB218,
for their Tue/Thur 2 - 3:15pm session.
