In May 1995 the IEEE Computer Society Press published my collection of biographies of 240 computer pioneers, under the title "Computer Pioneers". I am currently working on a second edition, hoping to add the names of pioneers that I missed, particularly those outside of the United States, and to fill out those of some pioneers whom I was unable to contact directly, or about whom I was unable to find information. I invite navigators of the WWW to assist me in this quest.
I have often been asked for a definitive description of a pioneer; basically I have two criteria -- that the contribution of the pioneer occurred fifteen or more years ago, and the contribution has had a significant "down stream" impact on the field. I am aware that some of the pioneers included in the first edition did not meet the criteria for a pioneer of some readers -- for example, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, or Thomas J. Watson, Sr. (or Jr.) -- on the grounds that theirs were not technical contributions. But I would argue that without their enterpreneurial or administrative contributions, our computer world would be different. So I invite you to help me by either nominating a pioneer to be added to my collection, or by adding information about pioneers already in the book but about whom I know little. Most of the latter are deceased pioneers. Even if you do not have complete information, even a little will help to get going -- such as a good source. As suggestions are made I will add names to the list of specific pioneers about whom I am seeking information.
