Compound document data can be any of the following

- Text documents and spreadsheets

- Networked calendars

- URLs
Different components store different types of data
The framework provides
- an organized environment for running a collection or components and protocols for interaction between them
- a structured storage capability that enables storage of various types of components in a single document file
- a scripting and automation facility through which appropriate actions can be specified for specific events
