- M&M's candies
- This site uses a very small gif image as a background, has a
creative use of Netscape tables to create a border around one line of
the text, uses multiple fonts and colors, sets type around an image
(the picture of the terminal).
- Sun's Home Page
- The page changes monthly, and was designed based on usability
studies. Buttons at top stay the same each month. Note the use of
one large graphic to catch the viewer's attention, rather than many
small, colorful elements fighting for attention. Also note careful
attention to use of color. Also note approach of providing actual
news (e.g., interviews) to attract readers. Compare to the old home page style.
The index to back
issues is very nicely designed, too, with thumbnail pictures of
back issues. Of course the down side of the current Sun home page is
that it takes forever to load over a 28.8k modem!
- MS Academic Cooperative Web
Site
- This site has a fast loading background (i.e., the
vertical strip on the left side of the page) that serves as a unifying
element on all pages in the site. The background loads fast because
it uses two flat colors. On the other hand, the tiny font (size=2) is
hard to read.
- Web Page
Design for Designers
- This is a pleasant break from mundane text-only Web pages, but it
takes forever to download even over an Ethernet link.
- Hotwired
- Surely whoever thought of naming things after caffinated products
(e.g., Java) did so when looking at a page like this!
