PURPOSE: to explore some "advanced" Java technology. DUE DATE: May 5, 1997 (Monday). This will give me a few days to look them over before I have to turn grades in. POSSIBILITIES: 1. Some API that is available from Sun. Examples include JDBC (for databases) RMI (for distributed systems programming) JavaBeans (component-based systems) Jeeves (server-side Java capabilities) threads (using most of the advanced aspects of Java for concurrent programming - wait/signal operations and group control) Here you might revise (if appropriate) your first applet to use one of these technologies or write a new applet. 2. Some API/service/class library that is developed by others. Examples include: Agglets (mobile Java agents) IFC (Internet Foundation Classes from Netscape) Here you might develop a small demo program using Agglets or rewrite your first applet using IFC or some other class library. 3. Some tool that can be used in conjunction with any of these technologies. The example offered by Rafiq in class was JATO (from www.powersoft.com) there are also various Integrated Development Environments that you might be able to get (though most of then will cost). Here you might use the tool/IDE to build a demo applet or to redo your first applet (if appropriate) and write a short evaluation of your experience. If you have something interesting in mind that does not fall into one of these categories, send me some email proposing what you want to do. If it fits at all within the parameters of the class and what we are trying to learn, I would be very receptive. ....dennis Dr. Dennis Kafura kafura@cs.vt.edu(email) Department of Computer Science 540.231.5568 (office) Virginia Tech 540.231.6931 (department) Blacksburg, VA 24061-0106 540.231.6075 (Fax) From lat@server.cs.vt.edu Mon Jul 7 11:46:19 1997 Received: from server.cs.vt.edu by ei.cs.vt.edu (5.65v3.2/1.1.10.5/13May97-0915AM) id AA24487; Mon, 7 Jul 1997 11:46:19 -0400 Received: from localhost by server.cs.vt.edu; (5.65v3.2/1.1.8.2/19Sep94-1023AM) id AA03734; Mon, 7 Jul 1997 11:46:19 -0400 Message-Id: <9707071546.AA03734@server.cs.vt.edu> To: ei_users@ei.cs.vt.edu Subject: tentative ei.cs.vt.edu downtime Date: Mon, 07 Jul 97 11:46:19 -0400 From: lat@server.cs.vt.edu X-Mts: smtp ei.cs.vt.edu will be tentatively down sometime on wednesday afternoon for a faulty cpu board to be replaced. once the f.e. contacts me on wednesday morning i will know what time he will be here. total downtime shouldn't be for more than 1/2 hour. please try to reschedule accordingly. In visiting area websites, it appeared that most were a bit small in scope, covering one town or county...and some were too large, covering all of southwestern Virginia, or tying us in with the Roanoke Valley and beyond. For most of us, we live, work, and shop across a four-county area: the New River Valley. When we're looking for a painter, a florist, a church, or a restaurant, we're primarily interested in the New River Valley area. When we want to buy or sell something, most of us don't travel to Bedford or Botetourt counties. So to that end, we've designed www.nrvbiz.com to become the infocenter of our region. FREE CLASSIFIED ADS! The site has some special features that we believe will be very helpful: there is a free classified ads section where you can buy, sell, or trade. In these ads, you can post up to 300 words PLUS a photograph, free of charge! Want to wish someone a happy birthday or anniversary or congratulate a friend on a job promotion? There's a section where you can tell the community about it. Want to publish a memorial poem or tribute? You can do it at www.nrvbiz.com completely free! The ads are completely searchable, so it's doubly easy to find what you're looking for. FREE COMMUNITY CALENDAR There's also a free community calendar. If your organization is sponsoring an event, if you're planning a reunion or holding a neighborhood yard sale, you can post your information on the calendar, free of charge! The calendar is searchable by date or by any keywords you choose. Take a look at www.nrvbiz.com AREA DIRECTORY OF SERVICES & ATTRACTIONS The rest of the site is an online directory to the businesses, churches, and special attractions of the New River Valley. Unlike the Yellow Pages, which is printed once a year, the directory listings can be updated on a daily basis, and are just as searchable as the classified ads. Naturally, putting this kind of site together isn't cheap, but we've found the most fair way to be compensated through the sponsorship of area businesses. Ten dollars a month gets a local business listed in up to three categories of the directories and creates a full page advertisement of their services, location, and pertinent information. We think that's VERY reasonable for advertising that's available 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, don't you? (Churches and non-profit groups are listed for FREE) AFFORDABLE ADVERTISING FOR AREA BUSINESSES And for those companies that want better exposure, we offer full color banner ads and display ads as well, for only $25-30 a month. A comparably sized ad in the area newspapers would cost that much or more for just one DAY, and would only be in black and white. Our goal is to get volume business support and to make it so affordable that all the small businesses of the NRV can advertise and compete in the marketplace. We believe that NRVBIZ.com will be a great benefit to the people of the New River Valley all the way around. As a token of our loyalty to this region, we also commit ourselves to using only local people in the design and development of the website. Design work won't be farmed out to California or overseas: the work will be done by people who live here, and the financial benefits will stay here as well. So please take a few minutes and take a look around at www.nrvbiz.com ... and tell your friends in the area, too! We just launched the site in July and need to get the word out as far as possible. You are receiving this mailing because your e-mail address was found on websites connected with the New River Valley. Your address is not being sold or traded.
