eXodus - instructions

1. Launch eXodus application from "At Ease". 2. Goto "Setting" menu, and open "Screen Editor". On the top left, set type field to "Rootless (Motif)" This option will create a Motif version of the X window. 3. Goto "Setting" menu again and open "Preferences" and mark the "Organize Icons" flag. This is useful since icons will be organized when the application is minimized. 4. (OPTION FOR KMS) For running KMS properly, you need to do the following additional steps. (a) You need to emulate your 2nd and 3rd mouse buttons. It is convenient to locate 3 buttons in a row since KMS requires to press several buttons together such as 1st and 3rd buttons; therefore, you may want to emulate the 1st button also, not to get confused. For example, F1 --> 1st mouse button F2 --> 2nd mouse button F3 --> 3rd mouse button To use like this, Goto "Setting" menu again, and open "Modifier Keys..." and "change" the button definitions such as (b) Now, you need to set the screen to be black/white. Goto "Setting" again, open "Screen Editor" and set "Colors" to "Black & White". [While in B/W DO NOT RUN NETSCAPE on video.cs.vt.edu --- the Mac will crash!] Now your Mac is ready to work as an X display server (terminal). 1. Without quiting eXodus, launch the NCSA Telnet application from "At Ease". 2. Open a Connection from the "File" menu, and connect to video.cs.vt.edu, and login with your user id and password on video. 3. Go to "Network" menu and do "Show Network numbers..." This will show you the network address for the Macintosh that you are using now. Most likely, this will look like 128.173.185.?? 4. Set the environment variable for the display by typing, setenv DISPLAY 128.173.185.??:0.0 From now on, the display environment variable is set to the X-server (macintosh, eXodus). Then, you can run any X client application which will be displayed on your macintosh. Launch and experiment with applications such as xclock, xterm, mosaic, netscape, xv, <-- you need mouse button emulations for this, too. kms etc.

Be sure to quit from each application when done. If you try to run too many X applications on your Mac, it will run out of memory.

When done with your session, quit all applications running on video (e.g., KMS), logout from the telnet session to video, and close down Telnet and eXodus.
