Computer Use - basics
Computer Use for CS4984
Many computers will be of use in this course, in a variety of capacities.
Devices to Get Connected to Internet
- Your own computer may be on the Internet or may be connected using SLIP.
- Systems in labs are generally on the Internet.
- X terminals are on the Internet but must connect to some computer to be of use.
Computers to Run Mosaic From
- Your own computer may run Mosaic, if it is a Mac, PC, or UNIX type system. If not present, simply get the latest reliable version from NCSA.
- Most lab systems will run Mosaic.
- From an X terminal you can login to a computer running Mosaic and set the display to come to the X terminal. If you do not have a computer account for this purpose, you can use fox.cs.vt.edu or ccrd1.cc.vt.edu as long as not every student does so at once.
Principal Uses of Various Computers
- video.cs.vt.edu: is a server for Hyper-G and KMS or can be logged into. It runs xprcedit for viewing page images, and sqhm for editing HTML documents.
Using X Terminals
- Hit RETURN to boot X-terminal (if not already booted).
- To make connections: To create a telnet connection to any TCP/IP machine select TELNET Terminal Window in the Create menu of the VXT V1.0 window. Enter the fully qualified host name (or IP address) for the machine to establish the connection. A window will appear for you to log into the chosen machine. Login, giving the appropriate password. Then set the display to
your terminal with:
setenv DISPLAY name.cs.vt.edu:0.0
In most cases you will use Mosaic (sometimes called xmosaic or mosaic).
- To end your sessions: Log out of or close ALL windows and session managers. Choose the Quit option under the Session menu of the VXT V1.0 window. Verify that you want to quit.
