Exercises - PI
Query by Image Content
Please take about 1/2 hour and try out IBM's query by image content
(QBIC) demonstration.
It will show you about searching and matching
approaches for multimedia (image collections with text).
Try both browsing and focused search. You might look for beach
scenes, or images with babies, or cities.
Please send a paragraph summary of your experiences.
Be sure to try each of the 4 types of search covered; under Graphical
Methods try both Color Percentages and Color Layout (be patient with this -
they will redo it using Java). For each type of
image you are looking for, indicate which approach worked best.
HyperCard Stacks
- Launch the HyperCard Player from On Guard. From the Home stack, click
on What is Hypercard? and go through each of the cards. Please explain
by email to the instructor: how buttons relate to anchors, how cards
relate to nodes, and some of the support provided for multimedia.
- Go to the File menu, Open Stack, follow the dialog boxes to Desktop,
then to Assignments, then to CS4984, then to Stacks. Inside that,
work through the cards in each of the following stacks:
- Your Tour of HyperCard folder, stack HyperCard Tour. Tell the instructor
your favorite animation, how a stack is like index cards, what you like
about backgrounds, and what animal the horn sounds like.
- Practice stack --- tell the instructor what these cards are good for.
- HyperCard Help folder (skim). In the HyperCard Help stack,
look at the topic Working with Graphics and read What are Paint
graphics? --- tell the instructor if HyperCard supports bit-mapped images.
Under the topic Browsing and finding information look over the first
8 topics and tell the instructor how you might open MacWrite from HyperCard.
In the Apple Event Primer stack read and very briefly tell the instructor
how you can communicate with an application on another Mac.
- HyperCard Stacks folder, Graph Maker stack --- which chart do you
prefer?
- HyperCard Stacks folder, Audio Help stack --- what frequency is supported
with Best sound quality?
- More Stacks folder, Background Art stack --- which background do you
prefer?
