Sony DAT player and SHURE mixer

This Sony DAT player/recorder is used to create high quality recordings of meetings and other events. When used in conjunction with the PZM table top microphones and SHURE mixer, the recordings are relatively noise free.

This page provides a brief tutorial on setting up the DAT and mixer for a typical recording session. The following list references the numbers in the diagram and gives hints on some of the most frequently used settings and controls.

1 - The sampling frequency is most commonly set to 44.1 kHz.

2 - The gain level of the SHURE mixer should be initially set to 6.

3 - Set the input selector to ANALOG.

4 - Center the balance control.

5 - Set the REC LEVEL initially to 5.

6 - Headphones can be plugged in to monitor recording and for playback.

The SHURE mixer can handle up to 5 inputs (microphones) at once. For a typical recording in a small room, one microphone is sufficient. If the room is larger, you may consider using two microphones. The microphones are plugged into the input jacks on the back of the mixer. If the microphones are PZM type mics and require a phantom power supply, be sure to set the PHANTOM switch on the back of the mixer to ON and the switches above each input that uses a PZM mic to the MIC position. If you are using microphones that do not require a phantom power supply, leave the switches above those corresponding inputs set to LINE. Now connect an XLR microphone cable to the output jack on the back of the mixer. The other end of this cable is connected to the matching transformer, mono to stero converter jack, and Y-splitter cable that should be with the DAT and mixer. The RCA jacks on the Y-splitter are then connected to the LINE INPUT jacks on the back of the DAT player.

You are now ready to record. Be sure both the DAT and mixer are ON. To begin recording, press REC, release, then press PLAY on the DAT. Record levels can be adjusted using the REC LEVEL control on the DAT and the individual gain controls on the mixer.
