Introduction to Archie
Archie is more of a historical curiousity now than a useful system. Developed before the World Wide Web, Archie was a system designed for searching remote databases and file archives.
- File and Directory Internet Searching
- Anonymous FTP server index database
- Provides searching (querying), of a database of available, (freeware, shareware, demo), software and info files on (Archie) Internet hosts.
- The Archie database store information on files available from anonymous FTP Internet sites.
- The Archie database is distributed on multiple Archie servers, each of which contain identical file information, (i.e. searching one Archie server is equivalent to serving any Archie server).
