Eudora is an electronic mail (e-mail) package for Macintosh or Windows. There are both commercial and shareware versions available. Virginia Tech distributes the shareware version.

Eudora is a POP mail client. In order to use it, you must have access to a POP mail server. Your PID entitles you to use the mail.vt.edu mail server. Your e-mail address will be

      your_PID@vt.edu

Configuring the Software

Open the Eudora application.

For Windows: The software should be correctly configured during installation. To check, from the Special menu choose Configuration. Check the following fields:

        POP Account: PID@mail.vt.edu
        Real Name: Your Real Name
        Return Address: PID@vt.edu
        Ph Server: ns.vt.edu

For the Macintosh: The installation does not configure the software for you. From the Special menu, choose Settings. Click on personal information and fill in POP Account, Real Name, and Return Address as above. Click on hosts and enter mail.vt.edu for the SMTP server, ns.vt.edu for the ph server, and finger.vt.edu for the finger server.

Click OK when you have correctly filled in the fields. Remember that your PID must be entered in lowercase letters. Quit the Eudora application.

Using Eudora

Bring up your SLIP connection.

Windows Users: Start SLIP by connecting from the WNET application.

Macintosh Users: Start SLIP from the MacSLIP control panel. You must have MacTCP and MacSLIP correctly configured first.

Start the Eudora application. If you have not already changed your initial PID password, choose Change password from the Special menu.

Sending a Message

Choose New Message from the Message menu.

Enter the address of the person you wish to send a message to in the To: field. For your first message, just enter your own PID. Notice that the From: field is already filled in for you.

Tab to the Subject: field and enter a subject for the message.

Tab to the body of the message and enter the text of your message. You may let the text auto-wrap at the end of a line or press return. Try sample messages to yourself both ways. It is a good idea not to put more than 80 characters on a line.

Click the Send button when your message is ready. Your message is uploaded to the mail server and sent on to the recipient.

Receiving a Message

Any mail sent to you is held on the mail.vt.edu mail server. You need
to check the server every so often to see if there is any mail there for
you.

Choose Check Mail from the File menu. Your Eudora mail client checks with the mail server and downloads your incoming mail to your machine. You may see

To see a new message, just open it by double-clicking.

Ending your Eudora Session

Choose Quit or Exit from the File menu to quit
Eudora. If you do not wish to use any other network applications,
you should terminate your SLIP session from WNET or MacSLIP.
