by Aixinag (I Song) Yao

Abstract

It is a lot of fun to browse through documents on the Web, searching information we wanted. Recent years, many search systems and search tools came up on the Web, becoming available to the people. But how do they work? how can we select a good search service that best satisfies our needs?

The most important feature about a database is the capability of searching information. Essentially all the search services are variations of database searches. Thus search systems are closely related to database.

In this chapter , we will find an easy way to understand the principle of search systems, and review some indexing and search technologies currently used on the Web. Moreover we will introduce several most popular search systems on the Web, and explore how they work, what strategies or criteria they are using, how often they up-to-date and so on, and discuss about how to select a search system.
