- In 1990, NCR & Motorola began shipping WaveLan and Altair
wireless adapters respectively.
- Several months later companies such as Proxim, Xircom,
Windata and others joined in and the need for a standard
became evident.
- The Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
802 working group, responsible for development of LAN
standards such as Ethernet (802.3) & Token Ring (802.5)
initiated the 802.11 protocol.
- The standard should be completed in 1997, but most
manufacturers today are building equipment based upon
the 802.11 protocol.
