Today, there are three regions of E-M spectrum that are
utilized for network communications.
1) Infrared signals
- The wavelength is in the range of 900 nanometers in an
Infrared system.
- There has to also exist a direct line of sight between the
transmitter and the receiver, although angles of +/- 30
degrees can be tolerated; furthermore, signals can
also be bounced on smooth surfaces.
- Infrared signals can operate at relatively high speeds.
Current products operate at 16 Mb/s, but the limits as they
are calculated by today’s transmitter / receiver technology
is around 100 Mb/s.
